Starting from Monday, younger pupils may resume contact learning in municipalities with low Covid-19 incidence
RIGA, Feb 16 (LETA) - Starting from Monday, pupils of grades 1-4 might resume contact learning in municipalities with low Covid-19 incidence, the Cabinet of Ministers agreed in principle today.
The ministers supported a proposal that regional principle will be considered in the education sector. Namely, younger pupils may return to schools in municipalities with 14-day cumulative Covid-19 incidence lower than 200 cases per 100,000 residents. The final decision will be made by the government on Thursday, February 18.
Health Minister Daniels Pavluts (For Development) said that the Health Ministry will hold consultations with specialists on how to receive data about changes in Covid-19 incidence across municipalities.
Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) supported the proposal on "safe school" principle.
According to the latest data from the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), there are 20 municipalities in Latvia, where the current 14-day cumulative incidence is below 200 cases per 100,000 residents - Alsunga, Cesvaine, Dundaga, Dagda, Durbe, Ergli, Jaunpiebalga, Kegums, Kuldiga, Lielvarde, Mersraga, Naukseni, Nereta, Pavilosta, Rucava, Rujiena, Salacgriva, Saulkrasti, Skrunda, and Vecpiebalga counties.
