27 kilometers of temporary barbed wire fence installed on Latvia's border with Belarus so far
RIGA, Nov 8 (LETA) - 27 kilometers of temporary barbed wire fence has been installed on the Latvian-Belarusian border, with 10 kilometers still to be installed, as the Provision State Agency's representative Vendija Pikse-Kucma told LETA.
Building the fence could be completed by the end of the week, said Pikse-Kucma.
Brace posts have already been installed for 35 kilometers, while barbed wire - for 27 kilometers.
After the temporary fence is installed, a permanent fence will be built on the border. The government recently supported the Interior Ministry's bill, according to which infrastructure development at the eastern border will be entrusted to Valsts Nekustamie Ipasumi (State Real Estate).
As reported, taking into consideration the steeply increasing numbers of illegal immigrants trying to cross into Latvia from Belarus, the government has declared a state of emergency that will run from August 11 until November 10, and then extended to February 10, 2022, in the following municipalities: Ludza Region, Kraslava Region, Augsdaugava Region, and the City of Daugavpils.
