Jelgava municipal budget this year will be almost EUR 146.783 million, or EUR 2,475 per capita
Riga, Feb 11 (LETA) - The budget of Jelgava municipality this year will be EUR 146,782,938, which is EUR 2,475 per capita, according to the draft binding regulations to be approved at the upcoming session of the city council on Thursday, February 12.
The town's population on 1 January 2025 was 59,303, so the 2026 budget per capita is EUR 2,475. In 2025, it was EUR 2,257.
Tax revenue represents 45.8 percent of the total resources of the municipal budget, non-tax revenue 0.4 percent, transfers 40.6 percent, revenue from paid services 1.8 percent, and financing 11.4 percent.
Tax revenue is the most important source of revenue for the municipality. In 2026, it is planned at EUR 67,279,697, an increase of EUR 4,273,981 compared to the 2025 updated tax revenue plan. Personal income tax continues to represent the largest share of tax revenue in 2026, at 93.9 percent.
According to the breakdown by functional categories, the planned funding for 2026 for general government services is EUR 13,776,718, or 9.4 percent of the basic budget expenditure, while municipal protection measures, public order and security are planned to cost EUR 6,479,340, an increase of EUR 1,360,166 compared to last year. The economic activity function is planned to cost EUR 20,375,090, or 13.9 percent of the basic budget, while environmental protection will cost EUR 5,853,787, an increase of EUR 1,027,726 compared to 2025.
Municipal territory and housing management is planned to receive EUR 5,423,832 or 3.7 percent. Recreation, culture, sport, museums, libraries and events are planned to account for EUR 8,379,248 or 5.7 percent of the basic budget.
The planned funding for the education sector is EUR 60,307,791, which is EUR 5,824,185 more than a year ago. The municipality spends the most on education - 41.1 percent.
Health and social protection is budgeted at EUR 14,993,517, an increase of EUR 797,671 compared to last year. These sectors account for a tenth of the municipality's expenditure.
