There is no energy crisis in Latvia - prime minister
RIGA, Jan 28 (LETA) - There is no energy crisis in Latvia, Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) told reporters on Wednesday.
Residents mostly pay their heating bills through equalized monthly payments so that "such heating peaks do not cause concern for the population," said the prime minister.
At the same time, Silina pointed out that Economics Minister Viktors Valainis (Greens/Farmers) had invited Climate and Energy Minister Kaspars Melnis (Greens/Farmers) and the Welfare Ministry to a meeting to discuss the current situation so that municipalities would be prepared in case of a sharp increase in heating bills.
Housing benefits have been increased and it is necessary to understand how ready municipalities are be to provide assistance, said Silina. She expects Valainis and Melnis to come to the government with realistic solutions that could be implemented if necessary.
As reported, taking into account the low temperatures this winter and the fact that heating costs for households will increase significantly, Valainis is calling for an emergency meeting of the State Energy Crisis Center to find effective solutions to support residents, the Economics Ministry informed LETA.
Valainis has instructed the Economics Ministry to contact the Energy Crisis Center in order to convene an emergency meeting as soon as possible.
According to information provided by heating utility Rigas Siltums, January 2026 was the coldest in Latvia in the last 15 years and the second coldest in the last 30 years, said Valainis. This has had a direct impact on heating consumption and will result in significantly higher heating bills for households.
Valainis believes that such circumstances call for coordinated action at the state level, which would be ensured by convening an emergency meeting of the Energy Crisis Center.
The rapidly growing burden of payments raises serious concerns about residents' ability to pay for utilities during the winter months, Valainis believes.
In his opinion, the format of the emergency meeting of the State Energy Crisis Center is appropriate not only for quickly assessing the situation, but also for making decisions on support measures to reduce the burden of high bills on households.
