Authorities in Daugavpils consider expanding cemeteries as Covid-19 deaths mount
RIGA, Nov 9 (LETA) - The local government of Latvia's second largest city Daugavpils considers expanding the city's cemeteries as more and more people succumb to Covid-19 and Daugavpils prepares for a merger with a neighboring municipality, vice mayor Valerijs Kononovs (Harmony) told journalists Tuesday.
Asked if the city's cemeteries are spacious enough, given the high number of Covid-19 related deaths in Daugavpils, Kononovs admitted that this is a pressing issue.
"Sadly, this is life, people will die and they will have to be buried," the Daugavpils vice mayor said, adding that it is still possible to "mitigate" the situation.
Kononovs said that the issue will become even more urgent after the merger of Daugavpils City and Augsdaugava Region and that it will be necessary to look for territories for cemetery expansion. The local government is looking for solutions to the problem, Kononovs said.
