63.5% of Latvia's population were ethnic Latvians at the beginning of last year
RIGA, Jan 18 (LETA) - At the beginning of last year, 63.5 percent of the population of Latvia were ethnic Latvians, according to information compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau.
Compared to 2024, the Latvian share in Latvia has increased by 0.3 percentage points. At the same time, the total population decreased from 1,878,575 at the beginning of 2024 to 1,860,565 at the beginning of last year.
The proportionally largest number of ethnic Latvians at the beginning of 2025 was in Smiltene and Kuldiga municipalities. In these regions 93.2 percent of the total population was Latvian.
At the same time, Daugavpils had the lowest proportion of ethnic Latvians - 21.4 percent. At the beginning of last year, Latvians made up less than half of the population in Augsdaugava municipality (43.8 percent), Rezekne (48.1 percent), Olaine municipality (48.1 percent) and Riga (48 percent), according to data from the Central Statistical Bureau.
