Latvian airspace in eastern border area to be closed for at least a week
Riga, Sept 11 (LETA) - Latvian airspace in the eastern border area will be closed from September 11 at 18.00 to September 18, with a possibility of extension, Defense Minister Andris Spruds (Progressives) announced at a press conference on the situation in Latvian airspace.
He pointed out that Wednesday's events in Poland constitute a bold violation of NATO airspace and Latvia must act accordingly.
The minister confirmed that there is no direct threat to Latvia at the moment, but that preventive measures are necessary.
Following the breach of Polish airspace by Russian drones, Spruds had instructed the National Armed Forces (NBS) to assess the closure of Latvian airspace in the eastern border area.
The Cabinet of Ministers, together with the responsible services, will assess restrictions on crossing Latvia's eastern border, the National Security Council agreed on Wednesday.
As reported, several Russian attack drones entered the Polish airspace overnight on Wednesday, of which those posing an immediate threat were shot down.
Later, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the country's airspace had been violated 19 times and that at least three drones had been shot down..
