EUR 228 million investment planned in vast Selonia military base

RIGA, Feb 24 (LETA) - Investments worth EUR 228 million are planned to be made in a vast military base in Sece parish, Aizkraukle municipality, LETA was told at the Defense Ministry.

The development of the Selija/Selonia military base is planned under a public-private partnership.

The military base will include a residential and administrative area, a canteen, a medical center, auxiliary buildings, warehouses, parking lots, a gym and sports field, a checkpoint, a fence, as well as a heating system and water supply. The base will be built on a 163 hectare area.

Hundreds of National Defense Service soldiers are expected to be permanently stationed at the base. The deployment of allied troops will be planned in line with allied initiatives and the development of the military base project.

At present, allied and National Defense Service soldiers may use the site for training.

The estimated cost of the project is EUR 228 million, but further development of the base could lead to higher costs. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2029/2030.

The total cost of the Selonia Military Training Area will reach EUR 303 million, including the military base with a cost of EUR 228 million. The project is being implemented by Valsts Nekustamie Ipasumi (VNI) public property manager under delegation of the Defense Ministry.

As reported, last Friday, a live-fire training area was inaugurated at the Selonia training area, marking a significant milestone in the development of Latvia's defense infrastructure.

Tactical and engineering training, armored vehicle maneuvers, aircraft overflights, and unmanned aerial vehicle training are already taking place on the territory of the military training area. Since June 2025, a unique drone testing center has been operating at the training ground, where local and international drone and anti-drone tests are carried out.
