RIGA, April 26 (LETA) - The annual nationwide Big Cleanup campaign will take place for the 18th time in Latvia today, the event's organizers informed LETA.

Over 1,200 sites have been registered at talkas.lv for this year’s Big Cleanup campaign

Vita Jaunzeme, the leader of the Big Cleanup movement, notes that Latvia, as the country that joined the cleanup movement in 2008 together with Estonia, has already received several World Cleanup awards for the highest percentage of citizen participation. She underlines that a recent report again highlights Latvia for its consistently high performance - as a country that regularly exceeds the 5 percent participation threshold.

The first nationwide cleanup took place on September 13, 2008, and was residents' gift to Latvia on the country's 90th anniversary.
