Parliament adopts in final reading Law on Local Governments, supporting president's corrections
RIGA, Oct 20 (LETA) - Saeima in the final reading today adopted the Law on Local Governments, supporting the amendments proposed by Latvian President Egils Levits.
The law will take effect on January 1, 2023.
After the president returned the bill to the parliament for revision, the Saeima public administration and municipal committee supported the regulation on elected local community councils, providing that Latvian citizens and European Union citizens permanently residing in Latvia, from the age of 16, will have the rights to elect the local council.
On Thursday, this regulation was also approved by the Saeima.
The new regulation aims to strengthen public engagement in municipal work, mutual cooperation, and will regulate relations between local governments and state institutions.
