37 people detained by monument in Daugavpils
RIGA, Oct 31 (LETA) - On Sunday in Daugavpils, 37 people were detained by the Soviet army monument to be dismantled, most of them did not comply with the orders of the police or were in a public place under the influence of alcohol, LETA learned from the State Police.
The situation was quite calm during the day on Sunday, people came to lay flowers and candles. In the evening, when the candles and flowers were transferred to the cemetery and the territory around the monument was fenced in order to prepare for dismantling, some persons showed frustration and were seeking conflict with the police.
About 200 people gathered around the fenced territory, some of them where swearing, whistling, shouting. The police dispersed the crowd, and persons who did not comply with the orders of the police were detained, the police reported.
In total 37 persons were detained and administrative offense procedures were launched - for non-compliance with the requirements of the police, for being under the influence of alcohol in a public place, for petty hooliganism, for playing and singing songs glorifying military aggression and war in Russian, for violation of the rules on flying drones. One criminal procedure was started for damaging property.
Dismantling of the monument proceeded without any incidences, the police reported.
