A few dozen people in Riga stage picket against unattractiveness of main street
RIGA, Sept 22 (LETA) - Around 30 people in Riga on Thursday afternoon staged a picket against the unattractiveness of Brivibas Street - the capital city's main thoroughfare, LETA observed.
Nongovernmental group City for the People organized the protest to demonstrate dissatisfaction with the poor condition of the street and buildings.
The protesters stood on sidewalks on both sides of the street holding posters with slogans "Drive on, nothing to see here", "I'm not impressed", "Life for this street" and "A noisy, unpleasant, dilapidated street puts off people".
Rudols Golubovs from City for the People said that the unattractive environment on Brivas Street is deterring people and thus harming small businesses. Golubovs said he counted over 80 empty shop windows on Riga's main street.
Activists want the local authority to calm traffic on Brivibas Street and make other improvements so that the street became more appealing to everyone, not just motorists.
