(w/ADD) Two drones actually struck Rezekne oil storage facility on Thursday

    (adds more information)

RIGA, May 8 (LETA) - The State Police have determined during investigation that two drones actually crashed into an oil product storage facility in Rezekne yesterday, the State Police informed LETA.

Following the drone incident at the oil storage facility in Rezekne on Thursday, the police launched criminal proceedings under the Criminal Law's Chapter 10, Crimes against the State.

During the investigation, the police determined that two drones had struck the oil product storage facility.

The criminal case has been handed over to the State Security Service for further investigation.

The police urge residents who have videos, photos or any other evidence not to share it on social media, but to contact the State Security Service. All such materials are analyzed together with information already available to the authorities and may be useful for further investigation.

The police point out once again that if a suspicious drone or drone debris is found, residents should immediately call 112 and under no circumstances should they approach the drone or its debris.

As reported, in the early hours of Thursday, several drones flew into Latvian airspace from Russia. According to information available at the time, at least one of the drones crashed in Rezekne, damaging an oil storage facility. People in the vicinity of Ludza, Balvi, and Rezekne received cell broadcast alerts on their mobile phones, warning them of a threat in airspace.

The National Armed Forces (NBS) were not involved in the search for the drone today, as that task was handled by the internal affairs services. Whether the drone, which was considered missing elsewhere, is the same one whose debris was found at the site in Rezekne will be determined in the ongoing investigation, the NBS told the LETA on Friday evening.

The State Police indicated that no active drone search operations are currently underway, but the police are on heightened alert.
