Parties have agreed on responsibilities in Kulbergs' future government
RIGA, May 25 (LETA) - The four parties that are trying to form the new government under the leadership of Andris Kulbergs (United List) have divided the responsibilities, but the specific names of the ministerial candidates will be announced tomorrow, Kulbergs, the prime minister-designate, said after a meeting with President Edgars Rinkevics.
The United List politicians are expected to head the Ministries of Finance, Justice and Smart Administration and Regional Development in the Kulbergs-led government. All these ministries are currently headed by politicians of the New Unity.
The National Alliance will lead the Ministries of Education and Science, Culture, Interior, and Climate and Energy.
The Union of Greens and Farmers will in fact maintain its current position, losing only the leadership of the Ministry of Climate and Energy: it will retain the post of the Saeima speaker, and will also lead the Ministries of Economy, Welfare and Agriculture.
The New Unity, on the other hand, will retain oversight only of the Foreign and Health Ministries and will have to take over the Defense and Transport Ministries, which have been the most publicly debated issues in recent months. Kulbergs did not disclose whether the post of the defense minister could be filled by the current prime minister, Evika Silina (New Unity), who has recently expressed interest in it.
Kulbergs reiterated that the time given to form a government was short and it was almost impossible to form a government, but that the impossible was possible if everyone worked constructively.
He pointed out that the process had been approached in such a way that each political force had equal responsibility in the government and that there were no built-in tensions. Working in the remaining months until the parliamentary elections, tensions and intrigues are not necessary and should not be built into the very foundations of the government.
Asked which partner was the most difficult to agree with on the division of areas, Kulbergs said that tensions were high and there was no intrigue in those days.
He also wants to introduce a "different political culture" in the work of the Cabinet.
Kulbergs repeated that security and the forthcoming elections are priorities for the new government.
Kulbergs is expected to name the persons who will take up specific ministerial posts at noon tomorrow.
Kulbergs' aim is to make the government's declaration as short as possible, as it is pointless to include four or five-year programs - it must contain elementary, practical things that can be done before the elections.
As reported, after the fall of the government of Evika Silina (New Unity), the president entrusted formation of a new government to Kulbergs, a United List politician, with a little more than a week for the parties to negotiate. The new government is to be formed by the United List, the National Alliance, the Greens/Farmers and the New Unity.
