Lithuania's Ignitis Renewables suspends two wind farm projects in eastern Latvia
VILNIUS, Oct 24 (LETA--BNS) - Ignitis Renewables, a subsidiary of Lithuania's state-owned energy group Ignitis Group, is suspending two wind farm projects in Latvia due to decisions made by the Latvian government, the Lithuanian business news website vz.lt reports on Friday.
The Lithuanian company's projects in the municipalities of Kraslava, which borders Belarus, and Ludza, which borders Russia, are being suspended after Latvia's defense Ministry produced a map that will not allow any wind energy development in most eastern border regions until 2027.
"Taking the Latvian Defense Ministry's recommendations into account, the implementation of two projects planned in the municipalities of Kraslava and Ludza has been suspended," Paulius Kalmantas, a spokesman for of Ignitis Renewables, told the website.
In his words, the company has optimized its portfolio and is continuing to develop seven other renewable energy projects.
The Kalniesi wind farm in Kraslava was planned to have 11 modern, powerful wind turbines. Meanwhile, Ignitis does not provide any details about the park in Ludza.
This year, three Ignitis Group solar power farms began commercial operations in Latvia.
Ignitis Renewables is also developing onshore wind, solar and battery park projects in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland, as well as Lithuania's first billion-euro 700 MW wind farm in the Baltic Sea and smaller farms in Estonia.
