Waste sorting to be mandatory in Riga from March 2027
RIGA, Feb 26 (LETA) - From March 1, 2007 sorting of paper, plastic and metal waste will be mandatory in Riga, as well as collection of biological waste in separate containers, according to regulations on municipal waste management in the administrative territory of Riga adopted by Riga City Council on Thursday.
Opposition councilors objected to mandatory separate collection of biological waste, arguing that it would lead to additional costs for residents.
The regulations stipulate that biological waste containers will be mandatory at both apartment buildings and private homes. Households that compost on their own property will not be required to have a separate container.
Composting will also be allowed in enclosed courtyards of apartment buildings, subject to certain requirements.
From March 1, 2027 waste management companies will have to wash and disinfect containers at certain intervals at no extra cost.
Managers of apartment buildings will have to provide information to residents on waste collection schedules and sorting and management costs.
Waste management services in Riga are provided by companies Clean R, Lautus Vide and Eco Baltia Vide.
