Investigating possible fraud with EU funds, searches conducted in property of Livani mayor
RIGA, Oct 19 (LETA) - Investigating possible fraud with EU funds worth EUR 1.8 million, searches were conducted in private property of Livani municipal council chairman Andris Vaivods (For Latvia's Development) on Wednesday.
The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) is investigating alleged fraud with EU funds worth EUR 1.8 million related with projects on construction of production infrastructure in the town of Livani. On Wednesday, in cooperation with the Corruption Prevention Bureau (KNAB) procedural activities, including searches, were conducted at the Livani council and private property of the council chairman, said Latvia's representative at the EPPO, Gatis Doniks.
The investigation has been going on for a while, and now a phase has set in where information about it is made public.
At present, no officials have been detained in the case. Prosecutor Doniks said that the time will show whether there will be any suspects. "The obtained evidence will be analyzed and conclusions will be drawn," he said.
Vaivods confirmed information about searches conducted at the municipal council, but said that he did not know about searches at his property because he had been at work all day.
KNAB confirmed to LETA that the bureau today provided support to EPPO, but, as it is EPPO's case, KNAB may not disclose any more details on it.
Doniks said that EPPO has launched more than 20 cases related with Latvia. In two cases court already has rules, and losses have been recovered in several cases.
