RIGA, June 7 (LETA) - The main coalition partner of the Union of Greens and Farmers at Jelgava city council also in the future will be National Alliance, said incumbent city Mayor Andris Ravins (Greens/Farmers), whose party has won six out of 15 mandates at the local council elections.

Greens/Farmers lost one lawmaker's mandate compared to the previous elections, but the party does not consider itself a loser and will continue the started work in Jelgava.

Greens/Farmers and the National Alliance together will have eight mandates. Ravins is confident that he will keep the mayor's position, and also distribution of vice-mayors' position could remain the same - one representing Greens/Farmers, and another - National Alliance.

Ravins said that he does not want to see political forces who have slandered Greens/Farmers in the coalition. At the same time, the party has no "red lines" and is always ready to talk with colleagues who also won seats at the local council, including the newcomers - Movement For and Latvia's Russian Association.

"Local governments have no political positions, it is important to do the job," said Ravins.

There are negotiations planned with the Latvian Association of Regions, New Unity who had been working in the opposition, Harmony that frequently supports the coalition in its votes.

Commenting on the low turnout at the elections, Ravins said that in this way residents voice their opinion about the attitude of the government to local governments.

As reported, the Union of Greens and Farmers won local elections in the central Latvian city of Jelgava on Saturday with current mayor Andris Ravins running as the party's lead candidate, the Central Election Commission reported.

Greens/Farmers won 32.27 percent of votes in Jelgava.

Meanwhile, New Unity received 13.55 percent, the National Alliance 12.45 percent, Movement For 10.38 percent, Latvia's Russian Union 8.14 percent, the Latvian Association of Regions 7.59 percent and Harmony 6.98 percent of the vote.

Voter turnout in Jelgava was 29.59 percent.

As reported, 327,938 voters or 34.01 percent of eligible voters cast their votes in this year's local government elections, according to the Central Election Commission's data.

This is the lowest voter turnout since the restoration of independence.
