RIGA, Dec 11 (LETA) - Members of the Sigulda Municipal Council on Thursday elected Linards Kumskis (Latvian Green Party) as the new mayor of Sigulda Municipality.

Kumskis was the only candidate running for the position.

In the vote, Kumskis was supported by councilors from the list of the Latvian Farmers' Union and the Latvian Green Party, and the list of the National Alliance, the Latvian Association of Regions, Vidzeme Party, and the New Conservative Party.

Voting against Kumskis were councilors from New Unity and the Sigulda Municipality Party, as well as Janis Strautmanis of the National Alliance, who said before the vote that he could not vote for this candidate as he "had not seen a manager worse" than Kumskis, who previously had served as vice mayor of Sigulda.

As reported, on November 13, the Sigulda Municipal Council unseated Janis Vimba (Sigulda Municipality Party) as the municipality's mayor.

Twelve councilors who had proposed Vimba's removal, as well as his deputy Inga Stupele (New Unity), voted to dismiss the Sigulda mayor. Five councilors voted against Vimba's removal, and one abstained.

The proposal to replace Vimba was signed by seven members of the municipal council from the National Alliance, the Latvian Association of Regions, and the joint list of the Vidzeme Party and the New Conservative Party.

Vimba previously told LETA that the no-confidence motion from the coalition partners came as a surprise to him. At the same time, he rejected the accusations made by the councilors.

Vimba was elected Sigulda mayor in July 2025 by 11 votes to eight, with one abstention.
