Ice in Gauja River keeps moving as floodwater reaches some garages in Carnikava
RIGA, Mar 3 (LETA) - Ice in the Gauja River keeps moving, but the river is swelling and water has already reached some residents' garages in Carnikava, regional mayor Daiga Mierina (Greens/Farmers) told LETA.
The mayor of the Carnikava region said that chunks of ice are piling up in the river, forming a congestion at a pedestrian bridge.
In Mierina's words, this night will be critical, as water from the swollen Gauja has already reached some garages in the area. Residents have not yet expressed worries that the floodwaters could flow into their homes, and Mierina said that the people are aware of the situation but the water level is not high enough to require evacuation.
Mierina said that all emergency services are on alert and ready to get involved in a rescue and evacuation operation.
