    This was coldest winter in Latvia in 15 years

    RIGA, March 3 (LETA) - Last winter was the coldest in Latvia since the winter of 2010-2011, according to the Latvian Center for Environment, Geology and Meteorology.

    Although December 2025 was 3.2 degrees warmer than normal, the average air temperature in January and February this year was 5.7 and 5.2 degrees colder than the average, respectively, and the winter overall turned out to be 2.6 degrees colder than the 1991-2020 average.

    The average temperature for the calendar winter was -5 degrees, the lowest level since the winter of 2010-2011, when the three-month average temperature was -6.2 degrees.

    The national average precipitation this winter was 76.6 millimeters, or 53 percent of the average.

    In December, 57 warm temperature records were broken, six more maximum temperature records were broken on the last day of February and 19 new cold records were set in early and mid-February. By comparison, only 16 cold records were broken in 2024 and 2025 combined.

    The frost was at its highest at -32.5 degrees on the morning of February 17 and -32.8 degrees on the morning of January 31 at the Daugavpils observation station, while the thermometer rose to its highest at +9.9 degrees on December 10 in Riga and +10.9 degrees on February 28 in Jekabpils.

    December was the fifth warmest on record in Latvia since 1924. January was the 15th coldest on record and the coldest since 2010, while February was the 17th coldest on record and the coldest since 2012.
