Riga, April 15 (LETA) - Rigas Udens municipal water utility has come across a sewage system polluter, whose activities last Thursday and this Monday are likely to have caused a strong smell in some parts of the capital, LETA was informed.

Sandris Vanzovics, the head of the communications department of Rigas Udens, informed LETA that the company carried out checks in the vicinity of the odor and identified the possible polluter with a high degree of certainty.

The information available to Rigas Udens, including photographs taken on the spot, has been compiled and handed over to the police and the State Environment Service for evaluation.

A sewage truck was involved in the contamination and the possible area was also recorded, Rigas Udens said.

As reported, last Thursday, smell of unknown origin was detected in sewage wells in the area from Zilupes Street to Dzirkaļu Street in Riga.

Rescuers, in cooperation with other services and representatives of the Riga Civil Protection Commission, searched for the source of the odor in the area. To determine the degree of concentration and hazardous nature of the odorous substance, the National Armed Forces' (NAF) unit for the protection against weapons of mass destruction was deployed and took sewage water samples to send them for laboratory tests.

Also this week, on Monday in the Krustpils Street area, extensive forces were involved in investigating the origin of an unknown odor, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) told LETA earlier. The employees of a nearby production company were evacuated from the scene due to the strong smell. In the evening, measurements showed that there was no increased danger to the population or the environment.
