Lithuania interested in SMR technology – minister after Newcleo meeting (corrects)

    Corrected verson: corrects para 2

VILNIUS, Sep 11, BNS - Lithuania is interested in the possible use of next-generation small modular reactor (SMR) technology in the country, Energy Minister Dainius Kreivys says.

Moreover, he says, such reactors could also use the spent and recycled fuel from the decommissioned Ignalina nuclear power plant.

"We had a meeting with Newcleo, a company that develops nuclear technology, develops 4th generation European reactors. They presented the technology and said that their lead-cooled reactors will use recycled fuel, and the Ignalina nuclear power plant's fuel could also be recycled," Kreivys told BNS on Wednesday after the meeting with representatives of Italian energy company Newcleo in Vilnius.

The Energy Ministry is also interested in the technologies of other companies around the world, Kreivys added.

"We agreed that the ministry's team will look into the technology. We are following a lot of technologies as we are interested in the American TerraPower reactors and the British Rolls-Royce reactors. As part of the strategy (the National Energy Strategy - BNS), we are constantly monitoring how everyone in the world is doing in building these reactors," Kreivys said.

The strategy, among other things, envisages that Lithuania would produce all its own electricity in a little more than five years, and it also envisages the possibility of developing low-power nuclear reactors in the country after 2030.
