RIGA, March 17 (LETA) - The number of newborns registered in Latvia this past January was 881, down 16.1 percent or 169 babies from the respective period last year, according to preliminary data published by the Central Statistical Bureau.

The number of newborns was below 1,000 for the fourth month in a row. The number of newborns registered in October 2024 was 994, in November - 940, and in December - 921.

In January 2025, there were 462 newborn boys, down 14.3 percent year-on-year, and 419 girls, down 18 percent.

The data also show that 2,408 deaths were registered in Latvia in the first month of this year, which is 10.9 percent or 294 deaths fewer than in the first month of 2024.

Thus, the number of deaths registered in January exceeded the number of births by 1,527, while the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 1,652 in the corresponding period of the previous year.

In January, 466 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 55.3 percent or 166 more marriages than in the corresponding period of 2024.

On January 1 this year, the estimated population of Latvia was 1.85 million.
