201 forest fires were registered in Latvia last year, covering a total area of 73.1 hectares
RIGA, Jan 24 (LETA) - Last year, there were 201 forest fires in Latvia, covering a total area of 73.1 hectares, according to information compiled by the State Forest Service.
In most cases (99), the cause of the fire could not be determined. These fires burned a total of 28.4 hectares of forest.
Another 47 forest fires were caused by careless handling of fire by forest visitors, resulting in a total of 22 hectares of forest burned.
Meanwhile, 27 forest fires were caused by human economic activity, including the burning of the previous year's field grass, the burning of logging residues, and the impact of motorized vehicles. In such cases, a total of 17.5 hectares of forest burned.
There were 17 cases of arson, with perpetrators burning 3.2 hectares of forest. Another 11 fires were related to other causes.
Most of the forest fires that occurred last year, 151 in total, took place in state forests.
