First old grass fires put out this year
Riga, March 9 (LETA) - The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) had to extinguish the first old grass fires in the country in the past three days, VUGD informed LETA.
On Friday, the first grass fire of the year was registered in Latvia - 400 square meters of last year's grass burnt in Roja county, Talsi municipality. The call was received at 14.36 and the fire was eliminated in less than an hour.
Five fires have been extinguished in the past three days.
The State Fire and Rescue Service reiterated that the outdated practice of burning old grass has been made an administrative offense in Latvia because it represents a threat to wildlife, crops, property and human lives.
