RIGA, April 12 (LETA) - The main challenge for the Latvian Green Party (LZP) in the upcoming local elections will be to enter the Riga City Council, where it has not been represented since 2006, said Edgars Tavars, Chairman of the LZP Board and MP, at the party's 35th party congress on Saturday.

He believes that in these elections the United List and its partner parties, the Latvian Alliance of Regions and the Liepaja Party have "every chance" to enter the Riga City Council.

"There is a complete populism that is being absorbed very successfully by one political party, while at the same time, with one foot in the door, befriending people who are very probably disloyal to Latvia, promising everything to everyone, just to increase the rating and get the maximum result," said Tavars, apparently referring to the Latvia First party.

Tavars added that the United List "cannot afford to throw around such promises".

The LZP will run with the United List in 38 districts. In each of them, LZP has a "perfectly clear vision" of what to do or has already done the work, the party's chairman said. He is confident of the party's success in the municipal elections, including in districts where the party will run for the first time.

In his address, Tavars also assessed the work of the current government coalition. In his view, the coalition is "approaching the peak of its incapacity" and should change.

The LZP, together with the Latvian Association of Regions and the Liepaja Party, form the United List in the Saeima.
