Highly pathogenic bird flu detected in farm in Jaunpils county

Riga, Dec 30 (LETA) - An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has been detected in a farm with 50 chickens in Jaunpils county of Tukums municipality, the Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) informed LETA.

The virus has been confirmed by laboratory tests carried out at the Bior scientific institute for food safety, animal health and the environment.

The PVD is carrying out eradication and containment measures at the farm.

The Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) has been informed of the outbreak.

To prevent further spread of the disease, all chickens in the holding are being culled, their products destroyed, and cleaning and disinfection carried out.

In Latvia in 2025, 106 wild birds found dead were laboratory tested for highly pathogenic avian influenza and 30 of them were found to have highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1.

This year, outbreaks of bird flu have been detected in poultry holdings in Birzgale county, Ogre municipality, and Durbe county, Dienvidkurzeme municipality.
