Karins voices readiness to take up position of PM also in new government

RIGA, Oct 3 (LETA) - Incumbent Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) voices readiness to take up the prime minister's position also in the new government.

He said that he is ready to head the new government if he manages to agree with partners, form the new coalition and win the majority support at the parliament.

The New Unity plans to start meetings with potential partners on October 4 - representatives of the United List, the National Alliance and the Progressives, primarily to discuss the priority tasks of the new government.

Asked whether the coalition would consist of three or four parties, Karins said that a broader coalition would be better, ensuring a larger stability and ability to work for the coming four years.

During the meeting with Latvian President Egils Levits on Monday, the New Unity explained its future vision on how to win the majority support at the parliament and agree on a common program, Karins said.

The members of the future government should share their vision about the country's development, Latvia's security, our economic development and transition of the education system to a quality that promotes competitive economy, said Karins.

As reported, according to information available on the Central Election Commission's website, the New Unity has likely won 26 mandates in Latvia's next parliament. The Union of Greens and Farmers has received 16, United List 15, National Alliance 13, For Stability 11, Progressives 10, and Latvia First nine mandates.
